Leading South Australian hotel management company 1834 Hotels has today completed an exciting acquisition of Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge.

Overlooking the tranquil ocean waters of picturesque American River, and surrounded by an abundance of native wildlife and flora, Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge is a 4 star resort-style property featuring 38 guest rooms, a restaurant, swimming pool, event spaces, and a range of other amenities.

Currently managing a wide network of hotels and resorts across Australia, 1834 Hotels will both own and operate the lodge, retaining an established alignment with the Mercure brand. 1834 Hotels has strong prior experience on Kangaroo Island, having previously managed a hotel in nearby Kingscote.

Andrew Bullock and Leigh Kentwell at Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge

1834 Hotels CEO, Andrew Bullock, expressed his enthusiasm to be returning to the Island.

“Kangaroo Island is one Australia’s truly iconic tourism destinations … with its stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and proud, hospitable Island community. We have been seeking a hotel investment here for some time now, and Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge, given its unique character, desirable location and high growth potential, is just perfect,”

Mr Bullock went on to say, “For 1834 Hotels, this is more than just a property purchase. We are committed to supporting the continued development of Kangaroo Island as a tourism destination and Island economy.”

“The surrounding community is an important part of this objective, and, as well as seeking to attract visitors from far and wide, we will ensure that the lodge retains a local character and heartbeat. This can be a place for the Island’s amazing producers to showcase their wares, and where residents may gather and enjoy their leisure time. We also intend to provide ongoing career and employment opportunities for locals.”

1834 Hotels Managing Partner, Leigh Kentwell gave his insights on what the future will hold.

“We feel that 2022 and beyond will be a very important period for Kangaroo Island, with the destination experiencing renewed demand from domestic travellers seeking holiday experiences closer to home. Then, a little further down the line, international travel will re-bound in earnest, and we are well aware of the appeal that Kangaroo Island holds for key markets such as Europe, the US and Asia.”

“As the new owners of Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge, 1834 Hotels will be getting to work straight away. We have a number of exciting property upgrades and initiatives planned, ensuring the lodge is best placed to accommodate this increased demand.”

“We also look forward to collaborating with our partners across industry and government, as Kangaroo Island continues to enhance and diversify its outstanding tourism and hospitality experiences.”

2021 has certainly been a proactive year for 1834 Hotels, with the company taking on a number of new hotel accommodation management agreements, including Quality Adelaide Central Apartments (Adelaide CBD), Bridgeport Hotel (Murray Bridge), The Anchorage (Victor Harbor), and KT Apartments (Kent Town). This trajectory is expected to continue across 2022.
